If you are keeping your car long-term, and fail to care for the exterior, it is likely that the engine will outlast the paint. While clear coats finishes on today's vehicles are highly improved and will protect the paint for many years, frequent cleaning and protectant application is required to optimize the paint finish life.
Wax Off:
Most car-wash soaps are highly detergent and will strip the protective finish(wax, polyglycoat, or Teflon) within a few washes, requiring reapplication of the surface protectant. Our recommendation is that you wash your car with a non-detergent soap . Not your dish soap - buy an auto-wash soap made specifically for washing cars.
Wax On:
Apply a good quality wax every couple of months . Between wax jobs apply a polyglycoat the day after you wash your car. Contrary to popular belief, whether your car has Teflon or not, it should be waxed periodically. All of this is relative - park your car in a garage if you can - it will make the paint last longer. Remember we live in an arid, desert environment and the sun bakes everything.
As busy as some of us are these days it might be worth seeking out a good detailing facility and have regularly scheduled detailing performed - many detailers will even come to your office or home.
